The Hidden Energy Drains In Your Home

Perhaps you’ve got used to looking at your energy bill and seeing a large figure you’ve got to pay – maybe you’ve stopped looking altogether because it’s always a nasty number. And that might be because you’re used to it and because, no matter how high it is, you don’t think there’s all that much you can do about it.

However, it could be time to start looking at it again because the truth is there may well be some things you can do, and one of the most important is to consider what the hidden energy drains might be in your home. These are the things that are making your bills bigger without you even noticing they’re using (or losing) energy, and with that in mind, keep reading to find out what some of them are.

Using Standby

You might think you’ve turned something off and assume that if it’s not using power, it’s not costing you anything. But the thing is that if something is still plugged in, that TV, games console, phone charger, microwave, or whatever it is, is definitely still using power and definitely still costing you something.

And one of the biggest issues with this is that a lot of people think the red standby light showing on a device means it’s off – but the very fact that there is a light at all means there’s got to be power going to it. The solution is to totally unplug what you’re not using, or invest in smart power strips that shut things off when they’re not in use – it’s a quick thing to do that could save a lot of money and wasted energy.

Drafts

If your home feels chilly even when you’ve got the heating on, you might have a problem with drafts in your home. Drafts can come from a variety of different places, like gaps around windows, doors, electrical outlets, or even an old garage door that’s letting cold air into your home (or letting the warm air escape).

You’ll need to check all around your home to find out where the drafts are coming from and then use weatherstripping, draft excluders, or perhaps thermal curtains to fix the issue. As for your garage door, if it’s not closing all the way and causing a draft, it’s wise to contact an expert automatic garage door repair service to deal with the problem once and for all.

Your Fridge And Freezer

Your fridge and freezer always have to be on, so unplugging them to save energy isn’t going to work – that would just mean you waste food. So of course, if these things always have to be on, you’re going to need to make sure they’re working at their best and most efficient because they could be costing more than they should.

It can be surprising to learn that a fridge that’s too full can be less efficient because the food blocks the air circulation from doing what it needs to do. And on the other hand, an empty fridge is also a problem because it loses cold air too quickly. That’s why it’s best to try to keep your fridge at about 75 percent full at all times. Plus, check the seals as if they’re not tight, cold air is going to be escaping and that’s a big waste.
